Every Monday from 7pm to 9pm, we host an old time music jam at the Market Street Tavern in downtown Chattanooga, near the intersection of Market and MLK.  It’s a non-smoking restaurant/bar, and the food there is great.  Anyone interested in playing or listening to old time music is welcome to join us!

Aug 21: Rich and the Po’ Folk, old time musicians from Kentucky teaching workshops at the Folk School

Ballads: this song-sharing session will trace the ballad tradition in Appalachia, from the ones brought from the British Isles to ballads made in America to ones being written today. Band members will contribute songs from such singers as Addie Graham, George Gibson, Sarah Ogan Gunning, and Nimrod Workman. Bring your own ballads to share.  10am.

Fiddle: Rich and Brett will share (mostly) Kentucky tunes from such fiddlers as Art Stamper, John Morgan Salyer, Bruce Greene, and others. Bring your fiddle to learn some of our tunes and share yours.  1:30pm.

Banjo: John will lead a hands-on session on the many styles of old-time banjo in Kentucky, including clawhammer, two-finger, and up-picking. Some of the musicians we’ll be channeling include George Gibson, Rufus Crisp, Banjo Bill Cornett and Lee Sexton. 1:30pm.

Aug 21: Rich and the Po’ Folk concert at Barking Legs, 8pm, $10 supports the Friends of the Cumberland Trail

Rich and the Po’ Folks dates to the spring of 2006 when a group of friends got together with a common goal: to build a band on their shared love for the traditional music of East Kentucky and southwest Virginia. Taking their inspiration from some of the jewels of Appalachian music–fiddlers, banjo players, singers, songwriters– Rich and the Po’ Folks take the work of Old Time giants such as Art Stamper, Ed Haley, Charlie Osborne, George Gibson, Addie Graham, and John Morgan Salyer and use fiddle, banjo, bass, mandolin and guitar to kick it up as only a string band can!

Aug 22: Presentation and John Haywood art opening at the Folk School

Music of Coal: The industry that has been such a large part of our history for a century, for good and ill, has left a rich legacy of music. This workshop will trace mining songs from the early pick-and-shovel days through the union struggles of the Depression to the contemporary issues of environmental destruction. **FREE** 1pm.

Sept 3: Folk School Party and Benefit for Buzzy Hamilton at Lindsay St. Hall 5-7pm

buzzyThis is a chance to come meet some of the students and instructors of the Folk School AND support a good cause at the same time!  Buzzy Hamilton needs our help with his battle against cancer, so come have some BBQ, bring your instrument and jam with us, and then at 7pm we’ll all head over to Nightfall to see the New Binkley Brothers open up for the Carolina Chocolate Drops!  Can you imagine a better Friday evening?  We can’t!

Anyone is welcome to join us for the party, but if you’d like to enjoy a great BBQ dinner, we’re asking a $10 donation.  Your advance purchase of a ticket will help us know how many to plan for.  Get your name on the list by clicking this button below!
